Why King Lee Heon didn’t recognise his name Yeonhuigun in Bon Appetit, Your Majesty?

“Have you ever wondered? In Episode 1 of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, when Yeon Ji-yeong told King Lee Heon that he is Yeonhuigun, the King didn’t recognize his own name. Why was that?”

That is because, Korean kings were not called by their real names. Instead, they were given titles after death:

🔸a temple name (like Sejong), which often ends in “jo” (progenitor) or “jong” (ancestor),

🔸or a posthumous name (like King Deokmun Ikmu Sunin Seonhyo). (Source)

These titles reflected their reign and character, while their personal names were kept private.

So, this was the reason the King didn’t recognize the name because it was only given after his rule ended. So, when King Lee Heon was called Yeonhuigun after his exile, he knew right away that Yeon Ji Yeong was from the future.
